Reflection - Reduced harm tobacco Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Reflection - Reduced harm tobacco - Essay Example Furthermore, the article contextualizes this lieu of the progress of corporate social responsibility and product harm reduction of tobacco companies, or lack thereof. Corporate social responsibility among tobacco companies is very much like a paradox; basically tobacco companies are like giving a poison to their consumers so that they can kill themselves. If we were to apply the logic of corporate social responsibility to the tobacco companies, we are presented with a situation that simply contradicts itself: if a tobacco company becomes a socially responsible corporation, it would be as if they will offer a slower poison to their consumers so that they will not dies as fast as before. The addition of the snus in the tobacco industry may be seen as the slower poison. It is not smoked so that there is a significant reduction in the risks of having diseases that are more likely to be acquired when smoking cigarettes. However as the article has pointed out, even with the existence of this less harmful tobacco product, it is not supported by legislation bodies and no tobacco companies are making an effort to pursue its development or more importantly, reducing the harm in their products. This is the point where corporate social responsibility among tobacco companies hits a dead end. Tobacco companies may be aware of this contradiction and that is why most of them are not making any efforts to reduce the harm in their products. Another contradiction in this situation that the article points out is how governments demonize tobacco companies while providing them a legal status. This is counter-intuitive to corporate social responsibility since it simply does nothing to affect the market demand that is fueling tobacco companies. As a result, there is no motivation for them to develop a less harmful tobacco product since their killer product rakes in the profit, and in the end that is all that matters for them. The Time Charterparty Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

The Time Charterparty - Essay Example Essentially, contracts were just oral agreements between the concerned persons but whoever should contracts be written agreements? In order to maintain legality the need for writing an agreement is important for the agreement and moreover agreements must meet a number of criteria to be legally valid: All the parties must be in agreement and something of value must be exchanged in the process. Different states have laws that allow whether given contracts need to be written or not. With a clear understanding of the contract law a closer look at what happens during an agreement between the parties and the exchange process is important. Agreement Between Parties Although it may seem obvious to talk about an agreement since when two parties enter into a contract they must have come to an agreement. However this is an essential element for any contract to be valid and all the parties must agree on major issues in the contract. Although there might be situations that prevent an agreement from being fully settled at and with regard to this different states have rules defining when an agreement legally exists. Offer and Acceptance A legal contract exists when one party makes an offer and the other party accepts it. This however would be orally or in writing. In normal businesses today, once an offer has been made it must be accepted for the deal to go on but however there would be situations when one party may be slow in fully settling the agreement and would think about it for a while or try to get a better deal. Thus unless an offer states an â€Å"expiry† date it however remains open for a â€Å"reasonable† period of time. To avoid any conflicts the best way to make an offer is to include an expiry date.3 In the sea there are often contracts of hire for vessels. This is for a specific period of time and hence the name â€Å"time charter hire†. Different lawyers have got a different interpretation of the laws relating to time charter hire. In this paper, different terms and concepts would be introduced. An in depth analysis of the charter party clauses for both hire and freight follows and finally a closer look on the two statements provided and a conclusion that reflects which of the two statements from Satya Kamal and Lord Denning’s cases best shows how the law relating to time charter hire should be applied. Terms and Concepts Time Charter Party The Time Charter Party is also called the Voyage Charter. It is governed by the general rules that bind the contract of law whereby there should be an offer and acceptance and that the two parties must have agreed on given terms and conditions. Moreover, the contract should be in writing or orally whatever the two parties agree on for the contract to be legal. In other terms, a Time Charter is a contract for the services to be given by the owner of a ship to a charterer. The services are usually given by the owner’s employees usually servants led by the master and the members are the crew.4 The charterer has does not receive any interest for use of the vessel but the services being rendered by the shipâ₠¬â„¢s owner are the ones that matter. Moreover, the charterer benefits from the commercial use of the vessel by giving the instructions to the servants on the cargoes to be loaded and the voyages to be undertaken and other orders may be given by the charterer in accordance with the terms and agreements of the charter-party. The charter-party has a duration that implicates the period of service but not limited to the geographical area covered or the amount of load carried. Thus time charter does not provide for freight, laytime and the charterer is obliged to pay for hire, delivery, redelivery and

Paradise Trilogy by Ulrich Seid Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Paradise Trilogy by Ulrich Seid - Essay Example Comparisons between the formal strategies of all the three elements of the Paradise Trilogy are also made. The paper also discusses the political relevance of Seidl’s work in the society of today. Introduction The depictions of human life in Ulrich Seidl’s Paradise Trilogy are certainly not represented in manners that would appeal to a close-minded audience. Therefore, to truly appreciate the essence of Seidl’s filmmaking in the Paradise Trilogy the private lives of the characters should be observed carefully and even their most disturbing secrets accepted. The Paradise Trilogy represents in its three installments the true feelings that humans yearn for and seek in life; love, faith and hope. The achievement for the director however, certainly remains in how the movies are presented in a way that is entirely realistic yet disturbing and provocative. The purpose of this paper is to extensively and comprehensively analyze the formal strategies of the last installme nt of the Paradise Trilogy, Paradise: Hope. The discussion aims to understand the transition of the formal strategies employed by the director throughout the three movies by examining the similarities and difference that are reflected in the entire trilogy. In conclusion the paper aims to define the art of Ulrich Seidl that is portrayed through the course of Paradise Trilogy’s journey with regards to its political and aesthetic relevance to the society of today. Paradise Trilogy According to Perry the progression of formal strategies in cinema is a reflection of the evolution of filmmaking itself that gradually transitioned from the sketches of mid and late 1800s in favor of tackling more complex storylines and abstract ideas in the early 1900s (25). While, commentators and analysts such as Perry would assert that the progression of formal strategies in filmmaking are representations of a new epoch in the history of cinema it should be noted that the skills of a director such as Seidl who wishes to portray human condition as it really is augments the implementation of formal strategies in films. Even though, the essence and the core of Paradise Trilogy remains inert throughout the three parts the interrelation of the stories has not barred Ulrich Seidl from employing a range of formal strategies in his last installment Paradise: Hope. As with Seidl’s previous work such as the movie titled Import/Export, those who are familiar with his talents would have expected the director to continue the projection of despair and stagnation with regards to the protagonist of the film. As Frey notes that once the director famously wished viewers present at the premier of his movie, Dog Days (2001) â€Å"a disturbing evening† (189). What certainly comes as a relief for the audience is that Paradise: Hope’s protagonist Melanie Lenz displays much conviction and integrity throughout the course of the movie which documents her journey at a diet camp an d her relationship with a much older doctor, the last installment of the trilogy in fact assists the emergence of an optimistic and hopeful side to Seidl that was indeed unexpected but rewarding. While it is obvious that the films in the trilogy share an important relationship with regards to the involvement of the characters in each installment of Paradise, the protagonist in Seidl’

Research literature review Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Research literature review - Essay Example (Waters, 2010). Duddy (2008) says â€Å"women have assumed increasingly indispensable roles in the economy and their contribution to family income has enabled poor families to cope with financial hardship.† Robbins (1999, p. 354) argues that â€Å"women do two-thirds of the world’s work, receive 10 percent of the world’s income and own 1 percent of the means of production.† Caraway (2007) also says that despite the huge influx of women in the workplaces as a result of globalization, the gender inequalities at work have remained largely in tact. Tatchell (cited in Paton, 2005) identifies that unless businesses change their discriminatory attitude towards women, men will continue to dominate and a huge pool of talent will go wasted. More women are working than ever before, but they are ever more likely than men to get low-productivity and vulnerable jobs, with no social protection and basic rights. (International Labor Organization, 2008). Mehrotra (2010) sa ys that in case of increased feminization of workplaces, children may feel neglected and seek stimulation outside the house. Regarding the increase in the number of women in the workforce, work attendance is at chance to be negatively affected since women also have primary responsibility for home and family matters. (Heathfield, 2007). Disagreeing, Joachim (2005) says that the rate of working women who can also be admirable mothers is growing now and it is unfair to suggest that they prioritize their jobs over families. According to Waters (2010), women run many of the world’s great companies, from PepsiCo in America to Areva in France. Feminization has extended from the once infinitesimal feature to a quite considerable and imposing feature obvious in the workplace settings. The increasing encouragement shown from side of the employers to the women is a positive and appreciable trend that no doubt, on one

Read the document I send you carefully Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Read the document I send you carefully - Essay Example With every market structure, however, comes advantages and disadvantages of adopting that particular choice. There are mainly four types of market structures with â€Å"perfect competition†on one extreme and â€Å"monopoly†on the other (Baumol, 1961, p.142. Furthermore, â€Å"monopolistic competition†and â€Å"oligopoly† are those salient structures that are counted asthe moderate ones. In this paper, we will be focusing primarily on the Perfect markets. It will incorporate an analysis ontheir relation to consumer demand and the comparison to any other market structure in the economy. PERFECT COMPETITION AND MARKET DEMAND Perfect Market: Perfect competition is â€Å"a very large number of firms producing a standardized product.† (McConnel&Brue, 2004) This means that a perfect market is that structure which entails numerous extents of â€Å"buyers and sellers† for selling the same kinds of product. Besides this, there are several other noticea ble characteristics of a perfect market that are being listed below: In competition oriented perfect market, there are groups of buyers and sellers who are involved. ... Lastly, there is perfect information about prices and technology among both the sellers and buyers. (Besanko&Brauetigam, 2010, p.330) The Perfect Market and the Demand Curve: The demand curve of a perfect market is perfectly elastic which means that it is a horizontal line. â€Å"The price elasticity of demand (PED) for a good is a measure of the degree of responsiveness of the quantity demanded to a change in the price, ceteris paribus.† (Quek, 2011, p.2). It happens so because of the fact that the presence of small firms in the market makes it difficult for them to influence the pricing fluctuations of the goods and services that they offer. This leads to an inflexible proposition of prices of products to the consumers and thus, a perfectly elastic demand curve is achieved in this context. The figure below illustrates the demand curve: Figure 1: Chart showing perfectly elastic demand in a perfect market (Source: Google Images) Quek propagates thatâ€Å"demand curve in a per fectly competitive firm is also its marginal revenue curve† (2011, p.2). â€Å"Marginal revenue†can be understood as the revenue received by selling one extra unit of production. The demand curve and marginal revenue curve are equivalent in a perfect market competition since the price of goods and services are preciselythe same. The demand curve is identical to the average revenue as well in a perfect market because each product is sold at the same price i.e. the average of the total production. An increase in the price of products in a perfect market leads to the quantity demanded of that product to rise to infinity while a decrease in price leads to the quantity demanded of the product to fall to zero. This is also
